Why Mockito is calling real method? - java

I have a class Service that calls a method of singleton class. I would like to mock a saveContract method calls.
public class Service {
public Contract save(Contract contract) {
Contract result;
...
result = ContractDao.getInstance().saveContract(contract);
...
return result;
}
}
I modified Service class like this (added a field and a constructor, for testing purposes only):
public class Service {
private final ContractDao contractDao;
public Service() {
this(ContractDao.getInstance());
}
public Service(final ContractDao contractDao) {
this.contractDao = contractDao;
}
public Contract save(Contract contract) {...}
}
And my test class is:
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class ServiceTest {
#Mock
ContractDAO contractDaoMock;
private Service service;
#BeforeEach
public void setup() {
service = new Service(contractDaoMock);
}
#Test
void saveContractTest() {
Contract changedContract = new Contract(...);
when(contractDaoMock.saveContract(any())).thenReturn(changedContract);
Contract givenContract = new Contract(...);
Contract actualContract = service.save(givenContract);
//Assertions
...
}
}

Add mockito-inline dependency and use the MockedStatic to mock the getInstance() method.
Your code should look like that:
#Test
void saveContractTest() {
Contract changedContract = new Contract(...);
try (MockedStatic<ContractDAO> mockedContractDAO = mockStatic(ContractDAO.class) {
mockedContractDAO.when(ContractDAO::getInstance).thenReturn(contractDaoMock);
when(contractDaoMock.saveContract(any())).thenReturn(changedContract);
Contract givenContract = new Contract(...);
Contract actualContract = service.save(givenContract);
//Assertions
...
}
}
Check the docs here to know a bit more about mocking static methods: https://javadoc.io/static/org.mockito/mockito-core/3.9.0/org/mockito/Mockito.html#static_mocks

In Service.save() I have not replaced the line
result = ContractDao.getInstance().saveContract(contract);
with line
result = contractDao.saveContract(contract);
So, we need to use a field instance which we mocked and not the singleton.getInstance().

How to fully test coverage a constructor that has a System.getenv("name") operation inside

I am using JUNIT5, have been trying to fully coverage a piece of code that involves System.getenv(""); I writed a couple classes to replicate what I am experiencing right now and so you can use them to understand me also (minimal reproducible example):
First we have the service I need to get with full coverage (ServiceToTest.class) (it has a CustomContainer object which contains methods that it needs):
#Service
public class ServiceToTest {
private final CustomContainer customContainer;
public ServiceToTest() {
Object configuration = new Object();
String envWord = System.getenv("envword");
this.customContainer = new CustomContainer(configuration, envWord == null ? "default" : envWord);
}
public String getContainerName() {
return customContainer.getContainerName();
}
}
CustomContainer.class:
public class CustomContainer {
#Getter
String containerName;
Object configuration;
public CustomContainer(Object configuration, String containerName) {
this.configuration = configuration;
this.containerName = containerName;
}
}
I have tried using ReflectionTestUtils to set the envWord variable without success... I tried this https://stackoverflow.com/a/496849/12085680, also tried using #SystemStubsExtension https://stackoverflow.com/a/64892484/12085680, and finally I also tried using Spy like in this answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/31029944/12085680
But the problem is that this variable is inside the constructor so this only executes once and I think that it happens before any of this configs I tried before can apply, here is my test class:
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class TestService {
// I have to mock this becase in real project it has methods which I need mocked behavour
private static CustomContainer mockCustomContainer = mock(CustomContainer.class);
// The serviceToTest class in which I use ReflectionTestUtils to use the mock above
// Here is where the constructor gets called and it happens BEFORE (debuged) the setup method
// which is anotated with #BeforeAll
private static ServiceToTest serviceToTest = new ServiceToTest();
#BeforeAll
static void setup() {
// set the field customContainer at serviceToTest class to mockCustomContainer
ReflectionTestUtils.setField(serviceToTest, "customContainer", mockCustomContainer);
}
#Test
void testGetContainerNameNotNull() {
assertNull(serviceToTest.getContainerName());
}
}
I need to write a test in which serviceToTest.getContainerName is not null but the real purpose of this is to have coverage of this sentence envWord == null ? "default" : envWord so it would be a test that is capable of executing the constructor and mocking System.getenv() so that it returns not null...
Right now the coverage looks like this and I can not find a way to make it 100% Any ideas??
EDIT:
So after following tgdavies suggestion, the code can be 100% covered, so this is the way:
Interface CustomContainerFactory:
public interface CustomContainerFactory {
CustomContainer create(Object configuration, String name);
}
CustomContainerFactoryImpl:
#Service
public class CustomContainerFactoryImpl implements CustomContainerFactory {
#Override
public CustomContainer create(Object configuration, String name) {
return new CustomContainer(configuration, name);
}
}
EnvironmentAccessor Interface:
public interface EnvironmentAccessor {
String getEnv(String name);
}
EnvironmentAccessorImpl:
#Service
public class EnvironmentAccessorImpl implements EnvironmentAccessor {
#Override
public String getEnv(String name) {
return System.getenv(name);
}
}
Class ServiceToTest after refactoring:
#Service
public class ServiceToTest {
private final CustomContainer customContainer;
public ServiceToTest(EnvironmentAccessor environmentAccessor, CustomContainerFactory customContainerFactory) {
Object configuration = new Object();
String envWord = environmentAccessor.getEnv("anything");
this.customContainer = customContainerFactory.create(configuration, envWord == null ? "default" : envWord);
}
public String getContainerName() {
return customContainer.getContainerName();
}
}
Finally the test case after refactoring (here is were I think it can be improved maybe?):
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class TestService {
private static CustomContainer mockCustomContainer = mock(CustomContainer.class);
private static CustomContainerFactory customContainerFactoryMock = mock(CustomContainerFactoryImpl.class);
private static EnvironmentAccessor environmentAccessorMock = mock(EnvironmentAccessorImpl.class);
private static ServiceToTest serviceToTest;
#BeforeAll
static void setup() {
when(environmentAccessorMock.getEnv(anyString())).thenReturn("hi");
serviceToTest = new ServiceToTest(environmentAccessorMock, customContainerFactoryMock);
ReflectionTestUtils.setField(serviceToTest, "customContainer", mockCustomContainer);
when(serviceToTest.getContainerName()).thenReturn("hi");
}
#Test
void testGetContainerNameNotNull() {
assertNotNull(serviceToTest.getContainerName());
}
#Test
void coverNullReturnFromGetEnv() {
when(environmentAccessorMock.getEnv(anyString())).thenReturn(null);
assertAll(() -> new ServiceToTest(environmentAccessorMock, customContainerFactoryMock));
}
}
Now the coverage is 100%:
EDIT 2:
We can improve the test class and get the same 100% coverage like so:
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class TestService {
private static CustomContainer mockCustomContainer = mock(CustomContainer.class);
private static IContainerFactory customContainerFactoryMock = mock(ContainerFactoryImpl.class);
private static IEnvironmentAccessor environmentAccessorMock = mock(EnvironmentAccessorImpl.class);
private static ServiceToTest serviceToTest;
#BeforeAll
static void setup() {
when(environmentAccessorMock.getEnv(anyString())).thenReturn("hi");
when(customContainerFactoryMock.create(any(), anyString())).thenReturn(mockCustomContainer);
serviceToTest = new ServiceToTest(environmentAccessorMock, customContainerFactoryMock);
}
#Test
void testGetContainerNameNotNull() {
assertNotNull(serviceToTest.getContainerName());
}
#Test
void coverNullReturnFromGetEnv() {
when(environmentAccessorMock.getEnv(anyString())).thenReturn(null);
assertAll(() -> new ServiceToTest(environmentAccessorMock, customContainerFactoryMock));
}
}
Refactor your code to make it testable, by moving object creation and static method calls to components, which you can mock in your tests:
interface ContainerFactory {
CustomContainer create(Object configuration, String name);
}
interface EnvironmentAccessor {
String getEnv(String name);
}
#Service
public class ServiceToTest {
private final CustomContainer customContainer;
public ServiceToTest(ContainerFactory containerFactory, EnvironmentAccessor environmentAccessor) {
Object configuration = new Object();
String envWord = environmentAccessor.getEnv("envword");
this.customContainer = containerFactory.create(configuration, envWord == null ? "default" : envWord);
}
public String getContainerName() {
return customContainer.getContainerName();
}
}

Mock method return type in java

Below is main code consist of one util class and service class using it
#PropertySource("classpath:atlas-application.properties")
public class ApacheAtlasUtils {
#Value("${atlas.rest.address}")
private String atlasURL;
#Value("${atlas.rest.user}")
private String atlasUsername;
#Value("${atlas.rest.password}")
private String atlasPassword;
private AtlasClientV2 client;
public AtlasClientV2 createClient() {
if (client == null) {
return new AtlasClientV2(new String[] {atlasURL}, new String[] {atlasUsername, atlasPassword});
} else {
return client;
}
}
}
Service Class is below :-
#Override
public Page<SearchResultDto> findFilesWithPages(QueryParent queryParent, Pageable pageable)
throws AtlasServiceException {
// Some code
client = new ApacheAtlasUtils().createClient();
//some code
}
I am writing unit test for service method and I am getting exception for createClient method asking for values for url, username and password which should not happen as this should be mocked but the mocking is giving me below error
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Base URL cannot be null or empty.

at com.jlr.stratus.rest.service.impl.FileSearchService.findFilesWithPages(FileSearchService.java:49)
The Test code is as follows:-
private FileSearchService fileSearchService;
#Spy
private ApacheAtlasUtils apacheAtlasUtils;
#Mock
private AtlasClientV2 client;
#Before
public void setup() {
MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this);
fileSearchService = new FileSearchService();
}
#Test
public void findFilesWithPages_searchAll() throws AtlasServiceException {
Mockito.doReturn(client).when(apacheAtlasUtils).createClient();
service.search(queryParent,pageable);
}
Your idea with spying is adequate (you can even go for mocking if you do not actually need any true implementation of that class).
The problem lies in the implementation:
// Some code
client = new ApacheAtlasUtils().createClient();
//some code
}
Instead of having the ApacheAtlasUtils as an instance variable (or a supplier method) you create the instance on the fly.
Mockito is not smart enough to catch that operation and replace the real object with you spy.
With the supplier method you can set up your test as follows:
#Spy
private FileSearchService fileSearchService = new FileSearchService();
#Spy
private ApacheAtlasUtils apacheAtlasUtils = new ApacheAtlasUtils();
#Mock
private AtlasClientV2 client;
#Before
public void setup() {
MockitoAnnotations.initMocks(this);
doReturn(apacheAtlasUtils).when(fileSearchService).getApacheUtils();
}
in your SUT:
#Override
public Page<SearchResultDto> findFilesWithPages(QueryParent queryParent, Pageable pageable)
throws AtlasServiceException {
// Some code
client = getApacheUtils().createClient();
//some code
}
ApacheAtlasUtils getApacheUtils(){
return new ApacheAtlasUtils();
}

How to check that a method is not being called using JUnit Mockito Verify

I have a class for which I am writing a JUnit test. I am trying to test if a particular method is never called.
public class CountryProcess extends AbstractCountryProcess {
private static final Logger log = LoggerFactory.getLogger(CountryProcessor.class);
private static final Long MAX_FILE = 20l;
#Override
protected boolean processCountry(Region region, City city) {
Long maxFile = region.getRequiredLongValue(SIZE);
if (maxFile < MAX_FILE) {
cntDao.addCountryLandMark(city);
}
else {
log.warn("File size was big");
}
return true;
}
And the test class is:
public class CountryProcessTest {
#Rule
public final JUnitRuleMockery context = new JUnitRuleMockery();
private final CntDao cntDao = context.mock(CntDao.class);
#Before
public void setup() {
Injector injector = Guice.createInjector(new AbstractModule() {
#Override
protected void configure() {
bind(cntDao.class).toInstance(cntDao);
}
});
}
#Test
public void shouldIgnoreIfFileSizeBiggerThanPermitted() {
//some code to make it trigger ELSE statement above...
verify(cntDao, never()).addCountryLandMark(anyString());
}
}
But this returns the following error:
org.mockito.exceptions.misusing.NotAMockException:
Argument passed to verify() is of type $Proxy4 and is not a mock!
Make sure you place the parenthesis correctly!
See the examples of correct verifications:
verify(mock).someMethod();
verify(mock, times(10)).someMethod();
verify(mock, atLeastOnce()).someMethod();
Any idea how I can fix this in the current context. Please give an example using current code so I get a better idea?
You are mixing two mocking frameworks:
jMock - JUnitRuleMockery
Mockito - verify method
Clearly, they are not compatible with each other.
Your verify call looks ok, I believe it will work as soon as it receives a mock created with Mockito (Use Mockito.mock(CntDao.class))
As an alternative to never you can use Mockito.verifyNoMoreInteractions or Mockito.verifyZeroInteractions, but they are less specific.
In addition to the answer from #Lesiak, here is a reproducible example based on your code with both conditions tested and BDD implementation as well (commented out).
#ExtendWith(MockitoExtension.class)
class CountryProcessTest {
#Mock CountryDAO cntDao;
#Mock
Region region;
#Mock
City city;
#InjectMocks
CountryProcess countryProcess;
#Test
void processCountryLargeSize() {
// given
given(region.getRequiredLongValue()).willReturn(100L);
// when
countryProcess.processCountry(region, city);
// then
verifyNoInteractions(cntDao);
// then(cntDao).shouldHaveNoInteractions(); // BDD implementation
}
#Test
void processCountrySmallSize() {
// given
given(region.getRequiredLongValue()).willReturn(10L);
// when
countryProcess.processCountry(region, city);
// then
verify(cntDao).addCountryLandMark(city);
verifyNoMoreInteractions(cntDao);
// then(cntDao).should().addCountryLandMark(any()); // BDD implementation
// then(cntDao).shouldHaveNoMoreInteractions(); // BDD implementation
}
}
The rest of the classes here are provided for reference.
Region
public class Region {
private int size;
public Long getRequiredLongValue() {
return Integer.toUnsignedLong(size);
}
}
AbstractCountryProcess
public abstract class AbstractCountryProcess {
CountryDAO cntDao;
protected abstract boolean processCountry(Region region, City city);
}

Mockito mock java function with inner method

I have a class like so:
#Component
public class AddressConverter {
public Function<Address, AddressDTO> convertToDTO = new Function<Address, AddressDTO>() {
public AddressDTO apply(Address address) {
AddressDTO dto = new AddressDTO();
dto.setAddress1(address.getAddress1());
dto.setAddress2(address.getAddress2());
dto.setCity(address.getCity());
dto.setState(address.getState());
dto.setZip(address.getZip());
dto.setZip4(address.getZip4());
return dto;
}
};
}
I have another class that uses this like so:
#Component
public class ProfileConverter {
#Autowired
private AddressConverter addressConverter;
public Function<Profile, ProfileDTO> convertToDTO = new Function<Profile, ProfileDTO>() {
public ProfileDTO apply(Profile profile) {
ProfileDTO dto = new ProfileDTO();
dto.setEmployeeAddress(addressConverter.convertToDTO.apply(profile.getEmployeeAddress()));
return dto;
}
};
}
I am trying to mock the addressConverter class like:
EDIT: HERE IS THE TEST CLASS
public class ProfileConverterTest {
ProfileConverter converter;
AddressConverter addressConverter;
Profile profile;
ProfileDTO dto;
Address address;
AddressDTO addressDTO;
#Before
public void setUp() {
converter = new ProfileConverter();
addressConverter = Mockito.mock(AddressConverter.class);
profile = new Profile();
profile.setProfileId(123L);
dto = new ProfileDTO();
Mockito.when(addressConverter.convertFromDTO.apply(addressDTO)).thenReturn(address);
Mockito.when(addressConverter.convertToDTO.apply(address)).thenReturn(addressDTO);
ReflectionTestUtils.setField(converter, "addressConverter", addressConverter);
address = new Address("1","2","3","4","5","6");
address.setAddressId(123L);
addressDTO = new AddressDTO("hash","1","2","3","4","5","6");
}
#Test
public void applyReturnsProfileDTO() throws Exception {
ProfileDTO result = converter.convertToDTO.apply(profile);
assertEquals(result.getEmployeeAddress().getAddress1(), profile.getEmployeeAddress().getAddress1());
}
}
I keep getting a NullPointerException in my test on the first Mockito.when line. I am thinking it is caused by the mock addressConverter class calling a function calling an inner method. The function might be null?
You are expecting Mockito to call your class constructor which will initialize the field convertToDTO: this is not the case, and the simple test here demonstrate it:
#Test
public void test_that_yeepee_works() {
final Yeepee y = Mockito.mock(Yeepee.class);
Assertions.assertNotNull(y.myObject); // fails.
}
public static class Yeepee {
public Object myObject = new Object();
}
You might try Mockito.spy instead.
Or you need to explicitly do it:
converter = new ProfileConverter();
addressConverter = Mockito.mock(AddressConverter.class);
addressConverter.convertToDTO = (Function<Address, AddressDTO>) Mockito.mock(Function.class);
If you were using getters, Mockito might have done it for you using smart mocks.
I think, NPE is because you have not created a mock for AddressConverter class. You should write something like below:
AddressConverter addressConverter = Mockito.mock(AddressConverter.class);
Mockito.when(addressConverter.apply(any(Address.class))).thenReturn(addressDTO);
Note: any (Address.class) will match any object of Address class. If you want to test weather your address object is being used while calling (mocking) apply method, go ahead and add hashcode() and equals() implementation in your Address class.

junit - how to mock field in real class?

I have a tricky situation. I am using MVP architecture for android but thats not important. I have a class called DoStandardLoginUsecase that basically just connects to a server with login info and gets a access token. i am trying to test it. But the problem is the context that i am passing in to it so i can initialize dagger.
public class DoStandardLoginUsecase extends BaseUseCase {
#Inject
UserDataRepository mUserDataRepo;
private StandardLoginInfo loginInfo;
public DoStandardLoginUsecase(Context context) {
/* SEE HERE I AM USING A APPLICATION CONTEXT THAT I PASS TO DAGGER
*/
((MyApplication)context).getPresenterComponent().inject(this);
}
#Override
public Observable<Login> buildUseCaseObservable() {
return mUserDataRepo.doStandardLogin(loginInfo);
}
public void setLoginInfo(StandardLoginInfo loginInfo) {
this.loginInfo = loginInfo;
}
}
and here is the test i have so far:
public class DoStandardLoginUsecaseTest {
DoStandardLoginUsecase standardLoginUsecase;
StandardLoginInfo fakeLoginInfo;
TestObserver<Login> subscriber;
MockContext context;
#Before
public void setUp() throws Exception {
//now when i create the object since its a mock context it will fail when it tries to call real things as these are stubs. So how do i test this object. how do i create an instance of this object ? I am willing to use [daggerMock][1] if that helps also.
standardLoginUsecase = New DoStandardLoginUsecase(context);
fakeLoginInfo = new StandardLoginInfo("fred#hotmail.com","Asdfgh4534");
subscriber = TestObserver.create();
}
#Test
public void buildUseCaseObservable(){
standardLoginUsecase.seLoginInfo(fakeLoginInfo);
standardLoginUsecase.buildUseCaseObservable().subscribe(subscriber);
subscriber.assertNoErrors();
subscriber.assertSubscribed();
subscriber.assertComplete();
}
}
I would do the test like this:
public class DoStandardLoginUsecaseTest {
private DoStandardLoginUsecase target;
private MyApplication contextMock;
#Before
public void beforeEach() {
contextMock = Mockito.mock(MyApplication.class);
// Note that you need to mock the getPresenterComponent
// but I don't know what it returns.
target = new DoStandardLoginUsecase(contextMock);
}
#Test
public void buildUseCaseObservable() {
UserDataRepository userDataMock = Mockito.mock(UserDataRepository.class);
StandardLoginInfo loginInfoMock = Mockito.mock(StandardLoginInfo.class);
target.mUserDataRepo = userDataMock;
target.setLoginInfo(loginInfoMock);
Observable<Login> expected = // create your expected test data however you like...
Mockito.when(userDataMock.doStandardLogin(loginInfoMock)).thenReturn(expected);
Observable<Login> actual = target.buildUseCaseObservable();
Assert.areSame(actual, expected);
}
}
