How can I redirect the user from one page to another using jQuery or pure JavaScript?
One does not simply redirect using jQuery
jQuery is not necessary, and window.location.replace(...) will best simulate an HTTP redirect.
window.location.replace(...) is better than using window.location.href, because replace() does not keep the originating page in the session history, meaning the user won't get stuck in a never-ending back-button fiasco.
If you want to simulate someone clicking on a link, use
location.href
If you want to simulate an HTTP redirect, use location.replace
For example:

The following section is for those using HTTP_REFERER as one of many security measures (although it isn't a great protective measure). If you're using Internet Explorer 8 or lower, these variables get lost when using any form of JavaScript page redirection (location.href, etc.).
Below we are going to implement an alternative for IE8 & lower so that we don't lose HTTP_REFERER. Otherwise, you can almost always simply use window.location.href.
Testing against HTTP_REFERER (URL pasting, session, etc.) can help tell whether a request is legitimate.
(Note: there are also ways to work-around / spoof these referrers, as noted by droop's link in the comments)

It would help if you were a little more descriptive in what you are trying to do. If you are trying to generate paged data, there are some options in how you do this. You can generate separate links for each page that you want to be able to get directly to.

Note that the current page in the example is handled differently in the code and with CSS.
If you want the paged data to be changed via AJAX, this is where jQuery would come in. What you would do is add a click handler to each of the anchor tags corresponding to a different page. This click handler would invoke some jQuery code that goes and fetches the next page via AJAX and updates the table with the new data. The example below assumes that you have a web service that returns the new page data.

I also think that location.replace(URL) is the best way, but if you want to notify the search engines about your redirection (they don't analyze JavaScript code to see the redirection) you should add the rel="canonical" meta tag to your website.
Adding a noscript section with a HTML refresh meta tag in it, is also a good solution. I suggest you to use this JavaScript redirection tool to create redirections. It also has Internet Explorer support to pass the HTTP referrer.

hostname -- Host name specifies the host that owns the resource. For example, www.stackoverflow.com. A server provides services using the name of the host.
port -- A port number used to recognize a specific process to which an Internet or other network message is to be forwarded when it arrives at a server.
pathname -- The path gives info about the specific resource within the host that the Web client wants to access. For example, stackoverflow.com/index.html.
query -- A query string follows the path component, and provides a string of information that the resource can utilize for some purpose (for example, as parameters for a search or as data to be processed).
hash -- The anchor portion of a URL, includes the hash sign (#).
With these Location object properties you can access all of these URL components
hash -Sets or returns the anchor portion of a URL.
host -Sets
or returns the hostname and port of a URL.
hostname -Sets or
returns the hostname of a URL.
href -Sets or returns the entire
URL.
pathname -Sets or returns the path name of a URL.

Now If you want to change a page or redirect the user to some other page you can use the href property of the Location object like this

Location Object also have these three methods
assign() -- Loads a new document.
reload() -- Reloads the current document.
replace() -- Replaces the current document with a new one
You can use assign() and replace methods also to redirect to other pages like these

How assign() and replace() differs -- The difference between replace() method and assign() method(), is that replace() removes the URL of the current document from the document history, means it is not possible to use the "back" button to navigate back to the original document. So Use the assign() method if you want to load a new document, andwant to give the option to navigate back to the original document.
You can change the location object href property using jQuery also like this
$(location).attr('href',url);
And hence you can redirect the user to some other url.
Basically jQuery is just a JavaScript framework and for doing some of the things like redirection in this case, you can just use pure JavaScript, so in that case you have 3 options using vanilla JavaScript:
1) Using location replace, this will replace the current history of the page, means that it is not possible to use the back button to go back to the original page.
window.location.replace("http://stackoverflow.com");
2) Using location assign, this will keep the history for you and with using back button, you can go back to the original page:
window.location.assign("http://stackoverflow.com");
3) I recommend using one of those previous ways, but this could be the third option using pure JavaScript:
window.location.href="http://stackoverflow.com";
You can also write a function in jQuery to handle it, but not recommended as it's only one line pure JavaScript function, also you can use all of above functions without window if you are already in the window scope, for example window.location.replace("http://stackoverflow.com"); could be location.replace("http://stackoverflow.com");

Before I start, jQuery is a JavaScript library used for DOM manipulation. So you should not be using jQuery for a page redirect.
A quote from Jquery.com:
While jQuery might run without major issues in older browser versions,
we do not actively test jQuery in them and generally do not fix bugs

The following solution using raw JavaScript works in all browsers and have been standard for a long time so you don't need any libraries for cross browser support.

Different options are as follows:

When using replace, the back button will not go back to the redirect page, as if it was never in the history. If you want the user to be able to go back to the redirect page then use window.location.href or window.location.assign. If you do use an option that lets the user go back to the redirect page, remember that when you enter the redirect page it will redirect you back. So put that into consideration when picking an option for your redirect. Under conditions where the page is only redirecting when an action is done by the user then having the page in the back button history will be okay. But if the page auto redirects then you should use replace so that the user can use the back button without getting forced back to the page the redirect sends.

I would also like to point out, people don't like to be randomly redirected. Only redirect people when absolutely needed. If you start redirecting people randomly they will never go to your site again.
The next paragraph is hypothetical:
You also may get reported as a malicious site. If that happens then when people click on a link to your site the users browser may warn them that your site is malicious. What may also happen is search engines may start dropping your rating if people are reporting a bad experience on your site.

So, the question is how to make a redirect page, and not how to redirect to a website?
You only need to use JavaScript for this. Here is some tiny code that will create a dynamic redirect page.

There is also one thing to note. I have added window.location.replace in my code because I think it suits a redirect page, but, you must know that when using window.location.replace and you get redirected, when you press the back button in your browser it will not got back to the redirect page, and it will go back to the page before it, take a look at this little demo thing.
Example:
The process: store home => redirect page to google => google
When at google: google => back button in browser => store home
So, if this suits your needs then everything should be fine. If you want to include the redirect page in the browser history replace this

Other answers are using jQuery's attr() on the location or window objects unnecessarily.
This answer also abuses it, but in a more ridiculous way. Instead of using it to set the location, this uses attr() to retrieve a function that sets the location.
The function is named jQueryCode even though there's nothing jQuery about it, and calling a function somethingCode is just horrible, especially when the something is not even a language.
The "85 bytes" is a reference to Code Golf. Golfing is obviously not something you should do outside of code golf, and furthermore this answer is clearly not actually golfed.
Basically, cringe.

I receive a GET response to this web service

I send a request on a get with a query parameter and it is being bind automatically to my option NNNNN, everything is great.
but, now i am sending Japanese strings in the query url. I encode the paramter by UTF-8 before sending, and I have to decode them using UTF-8.
but my question is where should I call the URLDecoder? i tried to call it in the getter of that parameter, but it didn't work, i kept having something like C3%98%C2%B4%C3%98%C2 instead of the Japanese characters
The solution that works for me is :
on the servlet, i should do this:
request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
and then on the html page i had to add this:

This is a good question which has potential clear many doubts about how information is processed (encoded and decoded) between systems.
Before I proceed I must say have a fair understanding on Charset, Encoding etc. You may want to read this answer for a quick heads up.
This has to looked from 2 perspectives - browser and server.
Browser perspective of Encoding
Each browser will render the information/text, now to render the information/text it has to know how to interpret those bits/bytes so that it can render correctly (read my answer's 3rd bullet that how same bits can represent different characters in different encoding scheme).
Browser page encoding
Each browser will have a default encoding associated with it. Check this on how to see the default encoding of browser.
If you do not specify any encoding on your HTML page then default encoding of browser will take effect and will render the page as per those encoding rules. so, if default encoding is ASCII and you are using Japanese or Chinese or characters from Unicode supplementary plane then you will see garbage value.
You can tell browser that do not use your default encoding scheme but use this one to render by website, using <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">.
And this exactly what you did/found and you were fine because this meta tag essentially overrode the default encoding of browser.
Another way to achieve same effect is do not use this meta tag but just change the browser's default encoding and still you will be fine. But this is not recommended and using Content-Type meta tag in your JSP is recommended.
Try playing around with browser default encoding and meta tag using below simple HTML.

Server perspective of Encoding
Server should also know how to interpret the incoming stream of data, which basically means that which encoding scheme to use (server part is tricky because there are several possibilities). Read below from here
When data that has been entered into HTML forms is submitted, the form
field names and values are encoded and sent to the server in an HTTP
request message using method GET or POST, or, historically, via email.
The encoding used by default is based on a very early version of the
general URI percent-encoding rules, with a number of modifications
such as newline normalization and replacing spaces with "+" instead of
"%20". The MIME type of data encoded this way is
application/x-www-form-urlencoded, and it is currently defined (still
in a very outdated manner) in the HTML and XForms specifications. In
addition, the CGI specification contains rules for how web servers
decode data of this type and make it available to applications.
This again has 2 parts that how server should decode the incoming request stream and how it should encode the outgoing response stream.
There are several ways to do this depending upon the use case, for example:
There are methods like setCharacterEncoding, setContentType etc. in HTTP request and response object, which can be used to set the encoding.
This is exactly what you have done in your case that you have told the server that use UTF-8 encoding scheme for decoding the request data because I am expecting advanced Unicode supplementary plane characters. But this is not all, please do read more below.
Set the encoding at server or JVM level, using JVM attributes like -Dfile.encoding=utf8. Read this article on how to set the server encoding.
In your case you were fetching the Japanese characters from query string of the URL and query string is part of HTTP request object, so using request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); you were able to get the desired encoding result.
But same will not work for URL encoding, which is different from request encoding (your case). Consider below example, in both sysout you will not be able to see the desired encoding effect even after using request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8"); because here you want URL encoding since the URL will be something like http://localhost:7001/springapp/forms/executorTest/encodingTest/hellothere 昨夜, 最高 and in this URL there is no query string.

Depending upon the framework you are using you may need additional configuration to specify a character encoding for requests or URLs so that you can either apply own encoding if the request does not already specify an encoding, or enforce the encoding in any case. This is useful because current browsers typically do not set a character encoding even if specified in the HTML page or form.
In Spring, there is org.springframework.web.filter.CharacterEncodingFilter for configuring request encoding. Read this similar interesting question which is based on this fact.
In nut shell
Every computer program whether an application server, web server, browser, IDE etc. understands only bits, so it need to know how to interpret the bits to make expected sense out of it because depending upon encoding used, same bits can represent different characters. And that's where "Encoding" comes into picture by giving a unique identifier to represent a character so that all computer programs, diverse OS etc. knows exact right way to interpret it.
Can I send a file as multipart by XMLHttpRequest to a servlet?
I am making a form and submitting it as multipart, but somehow I am not getting a response for successfully uploading it. I do not want the page to be refreshed, so it has to take place by Ajax.
That's only possible with the XHR FormData API (previously known being part of as "XHR2" or "XHR Level 2", currently known as "XHR Advanced Features").
Given this HTML,

you can upload it as below:

XHR will take care about proper headers and request body encoding and the file will in this example be available on the server side as form-data part with the name myFile.
You need to keep in mind that FormData API is not supported in older browsers. At caniuse.com you can see that it's currently implemented in Chrome 7+, Firefox 3.5+, Safari 5+, Internet Explorer 10+ and Opera 12+.
In case you're using jQuery, then you might be tempted to use its $.val() function as below:
formData.append("myFile", $("#myFileField").val());
But this is incorrect as it doesn't return the whole File object, but merely the file name as String which is utterly useless as it doesn't contain the file contents.
If you don't want to use document.getElementById() for some reason, then use one of the following instead:

formData.append("myFile", $("#myFileField")[0].files[0]);
An alternative is to use the jQuery Form plugin. Your entire form, when written and functioning properly without any line of JavaScript code, will then instantly be ajaxified with just the following line:

You may only need to change the servlet code to be able to intercept on both normal (synchronous) and Ajax (asynchronous) requests. Either way, the uploaded file should then be available in the doPost() method of a #MultipartConfig servlet as follows:

It's not possible to send multipart/form-data with XMLHttpRequest (though it is possible in modern browsers, with XHR2. See BalusC's answer).
A common way to achieve what you want is to use a regular form, but in an iframe instead. This way, only the iframe is refreshed on upload.

I have an ajax based file upload functionality. I need to handle the MaxUploadSizeExceededException when user upload a file whose size exceeds the maximum allowed. I got the solution from here, where user will be directed to a error page, when file size exceeds. Since I am using ajax request to upload file, I want to show a javascript alert in the browser when file size exceeds, instead of redirecting to some error page.
How can I do this ?
A possible solution would be to completely follow the solution in your linked answer, where, on exception you would redirect to an error.jsp, which would in fact return JSON, so as simple as

I don't know in Ajax, since you asked to show using javascript ,You can use ActiveXObject if you are using browsers that doesn't support HTML 5. If you are using modern browsers, you can use File APIs like below,

You will get the file size in bytes, you can divide the file size by 1024 for getting in kb.
